NOTICE OF COMPETITION – 2025 EDITION

 

The Circuito Nazionale Backgammon (CNB) Amateur Sports Association is pleased to present the 2025 CNB Italian Championship.

​

Participation requirements

To participate in the National Circuit tournaments and the Italian CNB Championship 2025 it is necessary:

  1. € 30.00 for 2025.

The membership fee must be paid by March 31, 2025, regardless of participation in tournaments. There are no reductions for new members or payments made later.

Championship Structure

​

The 2025 Italian CNB Championship is divided into 8 national tournaments, valid for the assignment of points in the general classification.

  • 6 best results achieved between 1 January and 31 December 2025 in category tournaments and CNB Opens are considered useful for the ranking purposes .

  • Players can compete in two competitive categories:

    • Champion

    • Advanced

All Local Tournaments will award points valid for the national ranking, thus offering all participants numerous opportunities for competition and growth.

New in 2025:

  • Some stages of the National Circuit will include an Intermediate Tournament, specifically dedicated to less experienced players.

National Category Tournaments (plus one for Playoffs)

  1. January 16-19:  MONTEGROTTO (PD)

  2. February 20-23: RICCIONE (RN)

  3. March 21-23: TURIN

  4. July 03-06: UDINE

  5. October 01-05: JESOLO (VE)

  6. October 17-19: MILAN

  7. November 06-09: CETARA (SA)

  8. December 05-08: ROME

January 2026: 2025 Playoff Finals and 2026 Championship Opening

Game Format of National Tournaments

The basic format will be the New Double Elimination with Consolation, which includes:

  • Main (main bracket).

  • Second Chance (fighters bracket).

  • The four finalists (two from the Main and two from the Second Chance) compete in the Final 4.

  • Those excluded from the Final 4 participate in the Consolation tournament.

  • The passages from one bracket to another are progressive, the losers in an advanced position re-enter respectively in an equally advanced position
     

Awards:

  • Over 32 players: 4 winners in the Main and 4 in the Consolation.

  • 32 or fewer players: 4 winners in the Main and 2 in the Consolation.

 

Match Points:

  • Champion: Main: 11 points, Second Chance: 9, Consolation: 7, Final 4: 13/15.

  • Advanced: Main: 9 points, Second Chance: 7, Consolation: 5, Final 4: 9/11.

 

Scores and bonuses:

  • Participation: 3 points.

  • For each match won:

    • Main: 9 points.

    • Second Chance: 6 points.

    • Final 4: semi-final 9 points, final 12 points.

    • Bonus: 6 points for the semi-finalists, 9 for the finalist, 12 for the winner.

    • Consolation: 4 points for each match won.

    • Bonus: 2 points for the semi-finalists, 4 for the finalist, 6 for the winner.

 

Note: The format may vary depending on the actual number of participants.

Local Tournament Requirements:

​

a) Local Tournaments must be scheduled on holidays or pre-holidays, at least one week in advance of the last national stage. It is mandatory to promptly communicate the results to the organizers of the Championship.

​

b) Local organizers have full autonomy in choosing the game formula. The most common modes are Single Elimination, Double Elimination, Triple Elimination and Main + Consolation . In case of using game formulas other than those mentioned above, the local organizer will inform the Board of Directors indicating the game methods. The BoD will be responsible for verifying the criteria for assigning points so that it does not differ too much from what would be used in one of the other formulas provided for the same number of members.

c) To make the results valid for the purposes of the Italian CNB Championship ranking, all participants must be in good standing with their annual membership.

d) A local tournament is considered valid only if it registers the participation of at least 16 players. In case of a lower number (15 or less), the tournament will be cancelled without the possibility of recovery.

Game format ( Open CNB and Local) and scores

​

• (Single Elimination ). Scores - Participation: 1 point, for each match won: 3 points; Bonus: 6 points for the winner, 4 for the finalist, 2 for the semi-finalists provided they have won at least 2 matches; Please remember that only the results achieved with the first registration are valid.

•  (Single Elimination Main + Cons ). Scores - Participation: 1 point; for each match won: in the “ main ” 3 points, in the “ Consolation ” 2, in the final phase 4 points. Bonus: Main 6 points for the winner, 4 for the finalist, 2 for the semi-finalists provided they have won at least 2 matches; Consolation Bonus 3 points for the winner, 2 for the finalist, 1 for the semi-finalists provided they have won at least 2 matches. Please remember that only the results achieved in the Main table with the first registration are valid.

• (Double Elimination ). Scores - Participation: 1 point; for each match won: in the “main” 3 points, in the “second chance” 2, in the final phase 4 points. Bonus: 3 points to each of the 4 participants in the final phase both from the “main” and the “second chance”.

• (Triple elimination ). Scores - Participation: 1 point, for each match won: 1 point; for each round played from the third to last included onwards: 1 point; Bonus (to be divided between players with the same points in the ranking): 8 points for 1st, 6 for 2nd, 4 for 3rd and 2 for 4th.

(Other game formulas). In case of using game formulas other than those mentioned above, the organizing club will inform the CNB Board of Directors indicating the game methods. The Board of Directors will establish the criteria for assigning points so that they do not differ too much from what would be used in one of the other formulas provided for the same number of members.

Final Ranking

​

The final ranking will be based on the overall points. In the event of a tie, the following criteria will apply:

  1. Most points in category tournaments.

  2. Highest number of appearances in category tournaments.

  3. Best single score in a category tournament.

  4. Next best scores in descending order.

  5. Best score in an Open tournament and subsequent ones in descending order.

Playoff Finals – Technical Regulations

​

Qualification: At the end of the competitive season, the first 12 players in the general rankings enter the playoffs to assign the title. Qualification is subject to participation in at least 3 national stages.

​

Round of 16: Players ranked 5th to 12th advance to the round of 16.

  • The 5th place player chooses his opponent from the players ranked 9th to 12th.

  • The selection continues with the 6th place winner, followed by the 7th and 8th, until the pairings are complete.

Quarterfinals: Players ranked 1st to 4th advance directly to the quarterfinals.

  • The 1st place winner chooses his opponent from the winners of the round of 16, followed by the 2nd, 3rd and finally the 4th place winner.

Semifinals: In the semi-finals, the player with the highest overall ranking chooses his opponent from among the remaining semi-finalists.

Final stages: The final for 1st place and the final for 3rd place are played.

Match scores:

  • Champion Category:

    • Round of 16: 13-point matches.

    • Quarterfinals: matches to 15 points.

    • Semi-finals and 3rd place match: 15-point matches.

    • Title match: 17-point match.

  • Advanced Category:

    • Round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals: 11-point matches.

    • 3rd place match: 11-point match.

    • Title match: 13-point match.

 

Prize pool: The prize pool, calculated on the basis of the accruals made during the season, is divided as follows:

  • 50% to the winner.

  • 30% to the finalist.

  • 20% to the winner of the 3rd place final.

 

Titles awarded: At the end of the playoffs, the winners are proclaimed:

  • Italian Champion – Champion Category CNB 2025.

  • Italian Champion – Advanced Category CNB 2025.

Tournament Rules

  • WBGF Rules apply, available on the official website www.cnbackgammon.eu and at the gaming venues.

  • Dispute Management: Any disputes are resolved by the Race Director, who applies the official CNB/WBGF regulations.

  • In CNB tournaments the Legal Move rule is adopted

  • “Dice on Checkers” preference rule is adopted: the roll of dice that stop on the checkers will be considered valid, unless a specific exception is agreed with the tournament director.

Digital watches

  • The use of clocks is mandatory in all games, with : 2 minutes per point and 12 seconds delay per move.

Warnings:

  • Players must notify the Tournament Director before leaving the room. Failure to do so will result in penalties.
